I know some of you have already read this on my Tumblr (WriterFreak001), but I am posting it on my WordPress as well! 🙂
Beauty & the Beast
2.16 “About Last Night”
Analysis & Theories
§ WriterFreak001 §
Before I get started, I would like to let everyone know that [**] next to scene title means there is a theory I have developed either about the scene or based off of the scene.
§ Previously on Beauty & the Beast §
I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but one of the aspects I look for in a show—especially BATB—are the short recaps previewed before the beginning of an episode. To me, recaps are significant to each episode—they highlight the important scenes from past episodes allude the newest episode. Recaps are not randomly put together, they, too, serve purposes towards the episodes.
Within the recap of “About Last Night,” there are three major pieces from the last episode, 2.15 “Catch Me If You Can,” in which the writers want us to remember:
- Sam’s (Tom E. Scott) arrest
- Gabe’s (Sendhil Ramamurthy) Warning **
- Vincent (Jay Ryan) & Catherine’s (Kristin Kreuk) long-awaited kiss
As we all know, Sam’s arrest prior to “About Last Night” is highly important because it ultimately brings out Sam’s desperation for revenge. Desperate times call for desperate measures, right? As the episode unravels (as we all know), we will finally get a chance to see just ‘how’ desperate Samuel Landon is.
I don’t know about you, but in the last episode of BATB, I thought it was a low move for Gabe to not only break into Vincent’s houseboat, but also warn him to never cross paths with Catherine again. Going behind Catherine’s back to tell Vincent basically what he ‘forces’ Catherine to do at the end of 2.15 definitely foreshadows Gabe’s manipulative ways. (We all know he loves to be in control of things; it seems he wants to be in control of Catherine’s life as well).
Obviously, pretty people like Gabe have nasty agendas.
“Why do you keep on ending up in Vincent’s arms?” Gabe has obviously noticed ‘the pull’ between Vincent and Catherine, and he obviously doesn’t like it. He chooses his words carefully, and plays a sympathy card as he preys on Catherine’s emotions. If he can say something to make Catherine regret a simple hug, imagine what he’s capable of?! (Obviously, we all have an idea about this answer!!) Needless to say, Gabe verbally forces Catherine to excommunicate Vincent from her life altogether…. Fortunately, Vincent has a stronger effect on Catherine’s emotions (and he’s not even ‘trying’ to control her!). Gabe’s order results in Catherine doing exactly what he doesn’t want her to do…end up in another man’s arms (as well as lips and everything else Vincent offers! ;])
(AND THE CROWD GOES WILD!!!)
§ Down Memory Lane §
First, and foremost, sit back and enjoy the gifs I spent forever making! 🙂
Obviously, the beautiful memories (which made me cry, I might add) the writers have chosen to embed into the beginning of the episode shows us what, exactly, Catherine dreams about. I’m not an expert, but let me say one thing: dreams are tied to your subconscious. Your subconscious exhibits your hidden desires (things you DON’T want people to know about you / things you DON’T know about yourself!!). Catherine’s heart (the id) has always given Vincent a TEN, and Gabe a zero. Her ego may make crap up in order to rationalize her relationship with Vincent, but we all know ‘it’s the heart that matters most.’
Now, the whole purpose for “About Last Night,” in my opinion, is for Catherine to match her mind to her heart—the only way to do that? She needs to see Vincent as a changed man—and him saving her isn’t going to hack it anymore.
§ Sneaking out of Bed §
The look on Catherine’s face when she realizes she isn’t in bed with the man she is currently dating was priceless! No matter ‘how’ much she enjoyed sleeping with Vincent (which, we all know, she didn’t deny), she knows she wouldn’t be able to face him afterwards.
That’s why I am led to believe that Catherine feels ashamed for enjoying the sex—and that’s what scared her and made her bolt for the door.
I find it hilarious that, not once, did Catherine wake Vincent up during her sneak-out. For a beast with super-hearing, she must have quite the charm on Vincent for him to be sleeping so soundly like that! If it was anyone else walking about his room, he probably would have awaken almost immediately. Needless to say, Catherine put Vincent into quite the dreamland. 😉
§ He Said, She Said §
After Catherine sneaks out of the boathouse, I’m glad we have some bromance & gal-pal time between Vincent & JT (Austin Basis) and Catherine & Tess (Nina Lisandrello). The fact that Vincent & JT are interacting more gives the show more of a S01 feel to the episode.
Pep-talk or not, I love JT & Tess’s supporting roles. They really know how to keep Vincent and Catherine sane during their break up! I know some argue that Tess was pushing Catherine towards Gabe, but I think Tess just wanted her best friend to be happy, and truly believed that Gabe could be that guy. (OBVIOUSLY SHE WAS WRONG!)
No matter what has happened in the past, the beginning of BATB shows some true friendship statuses. The fact that Catherine needed to talk to Tess about ‘what happened,’ proves 1) she trusts Tess enough to give her advice, 2) she’s conflicted—she doesn’t know how to categorize her night with Vincent let alone understand it 3) she’s looking for ‘someone’ to tell her how it is—her heart WANTS Vincent.
Both Tess and JT learn that Vincent and Catherine agree on one thing, if anything:
The very fact that Catherine believes her libido got in the way of her feelings for Gabe (if she has any at all), proves that she has sexual desire for VINCENT!!! And that Gabe, obviously, wasn’t satisfying enough.
I mean, come on, who doesn’t think ↑ THAT ↑ is attractive?!?!?! (no offense to Sendhil in anyway).
§ The Great Houdini §
Sam is definitely getting desperate. He coughs up a pill of Beast serum, somehow gets it into a syringe (don’t ask me how he obtained one!), and injects an inmate with the serum before making his grand escape. My only question: How does Sam get passed the other guards on site? There can’t only be just the one at Rikers… I think he had an accomplice to help him sneak out. He had to have obtained that syringe somehow…but the question is, who?
§ Hi….Gabe §
Anyone else find it suspicious that Gabe was in the precinct even AFTER Sam was arrested??! It’s almost as if he ‘knew’ Sam was going to bust out and was waiting to get the call because he really did not have a purpose to be there…. Like seriously, why would he want to look over the files of Sam’s arrest? He’s not a police detective—that isn’t really his job. I think Cat just gives him some slack because she’s “dating” him.
When Catherine deflected Gabe’s question about kicking Vincent out of her life, he did not seem the least bit concerned. By now, he should have known that when Cat is hiding something, she likes to change the subject and somehow make the question about her inquisitor.
For an ADA, he must have really bad interrogation skills…
Also, he tells Catherine that there are no guarantees in their relationship… He’s ‘trying’ to play nice, but the more he realizes just how much Catherine still loves Vincent, his “you don’t have to be in a relationship with me” ploy sharply turns into a “I’m right for you, Catherine…what you want doesn’t matter…” ruse.
I do believe Gabe ‘does’ love Catherine…but selfishly… He doesn’t want to share her with anyone.
Another thing… I don’t know about you, but I feel like Gabe is using Sam…. He may have arrested the guy for appearances, but something just doesn’t seem right about this whole thing….
Besides…this ‘HOLY CRAP!’ face seems forced…
§ Gotta Clean Up This Mess § **
Anyone else think Gabe REALLY wants to know what’s on that flash drive??? He’s given it to JT to analyze (under the radar) instead of turning it in to the authorities where it could be analyzed the legal way. I know it’s best to have it analyzed under the radar since it has sensitive information on it, but he seemed too eager to want to know what was on the drive. When would Sam have had time to upload the files to a cloud? O.o Besides, why would he upload that information (especially top secret information) to a cloud? That’s a bit reckless if you ask me.
“All I know is that Sam is hell-bent on breaking out of prison….” If he knew that, he would have taken every measure to ensure Sam was locked up for good. Gabe has a lot of power here…IMO, he’s not using it enough….meaning, he had possibly planned on Sam breaking out in his favor.
“Thought a lot of things were behind us…” Okay, so…Gabe basically told Catherine in the scene before that there were no guarantees within their relationship…. Why the attitude change, Gabe?
§ Phone Call §
The fact that Catherine actually DID pick up her phone shows that she cares for Vincent enough to speak to him about what happened the night before. Honestly, I believe, deep down in her heart, she never believed “it” was a mistake. She was just trying to convince herself that it was in order to protect herself from ‘going backwards again.’
Vincent telling her he wasn’t going to give up truly melted my heart! 😉
§ JT&T Surprising Reveal §
Okay, I love it when JT&T are together because they just CRACK me up—especially when Tess flashes her badge to force JT to use the facial recognition software.
I definitely was not expecting the whole “Are you speaking of Vincent & Cat, or you and me?” deal. I mean, we all know they did something on Valentines, but since that episode, we kind of haven’t heard about what had happened since their romantic night. I’m glad we now have learned that JT & Tess DID actually spend the night together.
§ CRASHHHH! §
Needless to say, this was the best part of the episode:
§ Sam Has a Heart §
Sam’s getting sloppy—that’s for sure. He somehow decrypted the code (see theories on how I think he obtained a copy of the file), and is after Judge Westbrook (I think that’s his name). Instead of killing the judge, he has a moment of weakness when he sees the judge’s son in a picture .So, instead, he knocks the guy out. The fact that he didn’t kill the judge proves he’s not some sadistic human being willing to kill anyone and everyone in his sight. He’s just…a victim wanting to right a wrong in his own terms.
§ No Guarantees…but…. §
I would just like to say that when Gabe says, “There are no guarantees,” and then assures Catherine that he is the RIGHT one for her, I, myself, get pushed further away from the ADA….and I think Catherine is too. It’s one thing to say that there are no guarantees, but it’s another to try and convince someone how to run their life….which we all know is one of Catherine’s biggest pet peeves.
Honestly, I am just unimpressed with Gabe these days.
“I’m not giving up without a fight.” See?!?!?! GABE ADMITS HE’LL DO ANYTHING TO MAKE VINCENT’S LIFE MISERABLE!!!!!!
§ This City’s Way Too Damn Big §
JT saves the day!!! Not only does he create the antidote for the inmate, but he saves Vincent’s ass by helping him narrow down the search for Sam. If not for his brainiac expertise, I am positive Vincent wouldn’t have found Sam if not for JT. 🙂
§ He’s a Profiler §
Jay Ryan really dominated this scene! Not only does he get on Gabe’s nerves (which I admire very much), he proves vital to the case because he’s able to get information from the judge.
“How? What can you do that I can’t do?”
Seriously Gabe? You’re asking that??? O.o
Well, here’s your answer!
§ I Was Going to Say Seven §
All I have to say is that I laughed so hard when Gabe and Vincent were fighting over Cat. Vincent definitely isn’t beating around the bush anymore in terms of his feelings, and Gabe is certainly showing his possessive side. I love how Cat just couldn’t choose so she told them to pick a number between 1 and 10! Hahahaha I love that! Vincent, Gabe and Catherine are handling what’s supposed to be an adult situation as if they were children! It’s hilarious! 😄
§ The Ring §
All I will say is this: Gabe is only putting that ring on her finger because he knows he has no chance in her in real life!
§ Second Marriage §
In this scene, Vincent is really trying!! He knows Catherine knows that he loves her…now he’s trying to find ways to get her to open up to him! I’m glad Catherine told Vincent her feelings / reasons behind not wanting to go backwards. She does open up to him, and tell him that the thought of returning to their old relationship scares her. Honesty’s a start! 🙂
§ Why Is She So Beautiful? §
I love the way Jay says this line as he puts his mask back on. Honestly, I think Vincent is starting to realize just how strong her power is over him. I bet, at that moment, he was weak in the knees! 😉
§ This Shouldn’t Work! §
Finally! JT and Tess have ‘defined their relationship!’ I was beginning to wonder if their V-Day celebration was just a one-time-thing. Obviously not. The writers have definitely convinced me that JT & T are cute together 🙂 I had mixed feelings when Tess said, “This DOES NOT make sense!” I felt bad for JT, but relieved that Tess also believed JT really wasn’t her type.
I hope their relationship sticks. It would suck for them to fall apart, but have to stick together for Vincent & Catherine.
§ Stay Away from Catherine §
This entire scene alludes to the end of the episode! When Gabe told V to keep away from Cat, he was basically implying an ‘or else’ statement. But, I’m sure, at this point in the episode, Vincent doesn’t realize what Gabe might have over him. Gabe certainly can’t out-strength him anymore so I don’t think he would see Gabe as a threat other than a rival in love.
Gabe just needs to go.
§ Vincent Saving Catherine (again!!) §
Catherine sure kicked ass in this episode! I’m glad she’s realized she doesn’t need to depend on ANYONE to save her! In the last several episodes, as much as I love the whole hero complex of Vincent, I felt like Catherine had forgotten a few of her martial arts skills. Glad she’s recovered!!! (perhaps it has everything to do with her ‘night’ with Vincent!! 😉 )
Again, I loved the childish banters between Catherine & Vincent. It just shows that even adults can act childish at times in order to handle a situation. 🙂
§ Catherine is Her Own Boss §
Repeatedly, Gabe has been telling Catherine what she can or cannot do. Each time, she defies him with her own decisions (whether she realizes it or not). Finally, she takes matters in her own hands and doesn’t let a man decide her life for her. Vincent obviously has learned his lesson from previous times…especially from S01. Now, it is unclear whether or not Vincent received all of his memories back, but I have a feeling he has…. I don’t know if you noticed it, but whenever Vincent, Gabe and Catherine were together, he seemed to side with Catherine a lot. Gabe, however, didn’t. To me it was almost as if Gabe WANTED Sam to complete his job. He tried slowing down the interview with the judge by saying “interviews take time…” and here, he says it’s too late for anyone to try and stop Sam. If he really wanted to stop Sam from doing anything (like bombing the building), wouldn’t have volunteered to go up to that floor himself? I think he knew what was going to go down, and since he was predisposed, he didn’t want to risk getting in the crossfire.
Now I’m going to skip a few scenes!!
A Beast-down happens…Sam practically loses his mind… and….
§ Make Them Pay the Right Way §
I thought this scene was truly touching!! First of all, Sam’s about to jump; he’s lost the will to live, and sees no purpose to continue on with life. Catherine tries to convince him to come back down, but she isn’t successful. Vincent, however, seems to at least gotten through to him even though he did actually try to jump off the ledge. I think, in this moment, Catherine sees just how much Vincent has changed. A man is about to end his life—even when Sam has done horrible things, Vincent proves himself a changed man by telling Sam that ending his life won’t fix things. He tells him that they’ll take down those people the ‘right and legal’ way. If Vincent truly just wanted to impress Catherine, I don’t think Sam would have connected with Vincent on a sentimental level. Catherine sees that, and she realizes that the man she loves has finally returned.
In the end, Sam just happened to be a victim of Muirfield’s higher-ups. He’s no different than Vincent in terms of losing a part of his life due to these beast-creators. Unlike Vincent, however, Sam didn’t have the hope that Vincent had…. Vincent was able to watch Catherine over the ten years he had been in hiding, and saw her as a figment of hope. Sam didn’t have anyone, really. We don’t know what kind of state Dana was in when she and Sam first lost their son, but obviously Sam felt useless staying at home, and needed to find a way to seek out revenge. I think, if Vincent didn’t have Catherine in his life…if he hadn’t saved her the day her mother was killed….he would be in the exact same position as Sam.
§ Never Go Back §
This is a touching scene between Vincent and Catherine. Catherine has confessed that she likes the New Vincent better, and affirms her belief that he won’t return to his old self either. When Vincent leaves, he doesn’t have to hear Catherine tell him to meet her at her apartment…He just knows. That smile says everything.
§ I Won’t Let Vincent Hurt You §
At last, a taste of Gabe’s true colors start to show. He tries to warn Catherine not to go back into a relationship with Vincent. I have a feeling he knows something about Catherine’s family history involving beasts. I think Bob must have told Gabe about that history in hopes of Gabe keeping Catherine away from Vincent. Perhaps he and Bob made a deal?
By the way:
§ Guided Light §
I have no words to say other than this scene was absolutely beautiful! The rose melted my heart, and made Catherine smile a way she hasn’t smiled in a very long time—her crinkled nose smile. Only Vincent has that effect on her. I have watched the ending scenes over and over and over again, and I swear, it’s like I don’t even know what happens! This scene brings something new to me every night, and I love it! 🙂
Last season, when Vincent said, “I am so in love with you, “ it was perfect! However, compared to 2.16, I feel like he was saying it out of desperation. He fell in love with her because she gave him hope in season 01. It seemed like the right thing to do, right? But here, in S02, Vincent practically didn’t even know Catherine, and slowly, he has learned to love her all over again. The way he said “I love you, Catherine,” evoked so many emotions in me, I don’t know where to start. It was gentle and sweet, it wasn’t hot-sounding like the first time.
§ Arrested §
I loved the morning after scene! Vincent was so happy to wake up and see Catherine still in his arms (figuratively of course).
This scene was beautifully written, and I’m glad they’ve realized that, no matter what, they’re going to get through the crap that comes their way—including Vincent getting arrested!!
I honestly did NOT see that one coming at all! What a cliffhanger!!!! O.O
I think everyone knows it had to have been Gabe. My reasons: 1) only a handful of people actually knew Vincent killed Curt Windsor: JT, Catherine and Tess (who wouldn’t dare rat Vincent out), Tori (who is dead) and Gabe (who NOW has motive, means and opportunity!!). 2) Aside from Catherine, Gabe was the only one who knew Vincent would most likely be at Catherine’s instead of the houseboat. If it was anyone else, I’m sure the NYPD would have checked the houseboat instead. That certainly wasn’t the case.
OVERALL FEELS: THAT WAS AN AMAAAAAZING EPISODE!!! 😀 SO MANY FEELS FROM IT, AND I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL MAY!!!!!!! 🙂 It’s definitely going to be a brutal wait, though, but I’m game! 🙂
- Gabe apparently ‘let’ himself into Vincent’s apartment. He already had two glasses out as well as a bottle of wine. I don’t think he was just there to tell V to back off of Catherine…. Save for “Hot Head,” Gabe really hasn’t been in Vincent’s houseboat so I doubt he would know exactly where to find glasses for the wine. I think the whole bottle and glasses thing was a ruse to hide his ulterior motive…. IF Gabe DID so happen to betray Catherine and Vincent at the end of 2.16, he was going to need proof, right? What if he went to Vincent’s to get something with his DNA to use against Vincent if he ever crossed him (which Vincent does when Catherine chooses him over Gabe)? Or, perhaps he was looking forsomething to connect Vincent to Curt Windsor…? Hmmmmmm….I guess we won’t know until May. ¯\_(:/)_/¯
- Cloud: Yeah, as if Sam uploaded a cryptic file to a cloud….where anyone with mad hacking skills could obtain it…. Sam, IMO, would have wanted that information all to himself. He wanted to take the law into his own hands so why risk everything he’s done to seek revenge? My guess? That accomplice I was talking about? Yeah, I think it was Gabe…. I think Gabe has always wanted Vincent out of the picture…. What better way to do that than to talk to someone who has extra beast juice stashed in his fridge? Sam’s briefcase couldn’t exactly go into evidence—it was filled with Beast serums. So, I think Gabe has Sam’s briefcase in his possession. I think he went to Rikers the night Catherine went to see Vincent, asked to interrogate Sam once more to ‘make sure’ he hadn’t missed anything and met with Mr. Crazy to devise a plan. If Sam consented into giving Gabe a serum, Gabe would let him continue with his revenge. I am betting that Gabe gave Sam the syringe, told him a secret passage way out of the prison and promised to have his briefcase and a flash drive copy hidden in a motel room in downtown New York City by the time Sam escapes. I know it’s a bit of a stretch, but why else would he have ‘been waiting’ at the precinct the next day?
Theories about the next episode, “Beast is the New Black”
- Catherine suspects Gabe
- Vincent suspects Gabe
- Everyone suspects Gabe
- Catherine tells Tess that JT is planning on breaking Vincent out of jail (somehow and w/o getting caught), and that she is going to plan to leave NYC with Vincent.
- Tess tells her THAT is ridiculous
- Catherine doesn’t seem to care, all she wants is to be with Vincent
- Vincent breaks out, Catherine harbors him in her apartment since his houseboat probably isn’t safe anymore, and she starts packing for their escape.
- Vincent tries to convince her to stay while he runs
- She won’t have any of that
One or two things will happen:
- Something happens that exonerates Vincent, and they won’t have to run.
- They do run…hide out for a few episodes, and then return once the heat has settled.
Whatever they do decide, they’ve got to be careful around Gabe—he cannot be trusted anymore.
Well, it was fun to analyze this episode! I can’t wait for BATB to return!! 🙂 Thanks for reading! I’ll be in touch! 🙂
